Tom and Beckie had heard before about snakes acting differently around pregnant women. None of those tales even compared to Beckie’s situation with Poseidon.

This time was different. The couple was in a state of shock.

In an interview, Tom explained his theory behind Poseidon’s behavior. He said “My theory is that because snakes are acutely aware of changes in body temperature they enjoy basking in the warmth of a pregnant woman’s tummy.

The Snake Man

As it turns out, there are a lot more to snakes than we know. In fact, Bill Haast – aka the “Snake Man” – injected himself with snake venom every day for more than 60 years! What? He was experimenting on himself – he wanted to test if he could build immunity to the toxins.

Throughout his career, he was bitten no less than 173 times by some of the most dangerous snakes in the world. His blood was later used to save countless lives from snake venom. The best part? This man lived to the age of 100!

In Tokyo, a snake became best friends with what was meant to be its meal. The zookeepers gave the rat snake a live hamster for dinner. However, instead of eating it, the snake kept him as a little friend and pet.

To say the least, Gohan the hamster, and Aochan the rat snake made an odd couple. The furry little critter loved the snake just as much as the snake loved it.

Flicking Tongues

Flicking Tongues

Flicking Tongues

Snakes tend to flick their tongue in order to pick up on smells and different chemicals in the air. They collect particles on their tongue and deliver them to small openings on the top of their mouth – this is known as the Jacobson’s organ. It will analyze any stimuli and create the correct response.

Staring Contest

Don’t try getting into a staring contest with a snake. It is most definitely not a battle you’re going to win. Snakes don’t have eyelids which means they can’t blink. What they have instead is a thin layer of transparent skin called brille that covers and protects their eyes.

Snake Eyes

Snake Eyes

Did you know that a snake’s eyes can tell you whether it’s venomous or not? For the most part, venomous snakes have slitted or elliptical pupils. Non-venomous snakes normally have round pupils. This is something you definitely want to keep an eye out for. All the same, there are still exceptions to this rule. If you happen to run into a snake, it’s best to walk away.

Snake Scales help them breathe underwater.

Scales

Scales

Snake scales serve different purposes for different species. For most snakes, their scales tend to help them retain moisture in their body. Other times, the scales help with grip and reduce friction, helping snakes navigate more quickly in different terrain.

While reptiles normally lay eggs, 30% of snakes give birth to live young. Live births for snakes are either viviparous, meaning they lay eggs, or ovoviviparous, meaning the eggs are hatched inside the mother’s body. It all depends on the species.

Possible Cancer Cure

Native to South America, the Pico Jackfruit snake has potent venom that causes vomiting, diarrhea, blood pressure crash, blindness, and a closed-up throat. If a bite isn’t treated, an adult can die within minutes.

However, scientists are now exploring this venom as a possible cure for cancer. They’re trying to engineer the venom to target only cancer cells.

It turns out that wearing denim is an effective protection against snake venom. You can make fun of jorts all you want, but they might just save your life if you happen to be bitten by a snake.

According to a study done in California, snakes injected 60-66% less venom into denim-covered gloves compared to bare hands.

New Zealand’s geological climate has gone through several periods of glaciation, which made it too cold for snakes to reside in. This is similar to the fact that there are no snakes in Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland, Ireland, and Antarctica.

In 1942, the first scaleless snake was found. It was discovered in the wild. The western garter snake was the first one to start the trend of domesticated snakes. Lots of people search for scaleless snakes for their striking colors due to the absence of scales.

Surprisingly, these snakes function the same way their scaled counterparts do.

Flying Snakes

Flying Snakes

Native to Southeast Asia, the flying snake is named for its ability to glide through forests. The Chrysopelea climbs trees with the special scales on its belly, where it launches itself off from once it gets to the top. After that, it curves its body and stays in motion to stay in the air and land safely.

Flying snakes can reach as far as 100 meters with minimal effort.

Being too hot is something snakes can’t handle. Heat can trigger their hunger instinct, and if there’s no prey around, the snake can actually start eating itself!

Since snakes also have an instinct to keep prey in, an overheating snake won’t be able to stop once it starts biting and eventually will die from blood loss.

Sea snakes dive deep with their paddle-shaped tails and flattened bodies. For the most part, sea snakes don’t bite unless they’re provoked.

However, some species can be aggressive. Despite their name, they aren’t fully aquatic and don’t have gills. Due to this fact, they need to surface to breathe regularly.

Since snakes can slow their metabolism so much, they can go without food for long periods of time. However, they will be less and less active as time goes by. One study found that snakes survive without food by digesting their own organs – even their heart!

Their slower metabolism allows them to survive losing heart muscle and mass in other organs. They can go as long as 2 years without eating!

Don’t Wash A Snake Bite Wound

Don’t Wash A Snake Bite Wound

There are plenty of misconceptions about how one should deal with a snake attack. When treating a snake wound, one should never wash the wound with water! Rinsing a snake bit will later remove any traces of venom on the wound which makes it harder for emergency responders to figure out which snake bit them.

As a result, this will slow down the treatment process which can be lethal.
