Chip and Joanna Gaines had a knack for improving homes, so they decided to turn this hobby of theirs into a business. The talented couple rose to stardom by starring in Fixer Upper on the HGTV. You would be wrong if you assumed that it was a breeze for them to work on their own home. Can you believe that it took these two 18 months to finish it? Let us find out why this was the case. You will be impressed by what it looked like in the end!

You Won’t Believe How Long It Took Chip And Joanna Gaines To Finish Their Home
The Fixer Upper Couple
This couple is well-known among fans of home renovations. However, not many people know that their romance started out like a fairy tale. Chip and Joanna both grew up in Texas and attended Baylor University. They did not meet in college since they had an age gap of 3 years. The two first met in 2001.

The Fixer Upper Couple
As soon as Chip saw her in the photographer her father kept in his shop, this young man could feel that this was the woman of his dreams. In the end, he turned out to be right! They walked down the aisle in 2003. It was only a matter of time before they found a place they could turn into a home.
A Tiny Farmhouse
It was in 2012 that Chip and Joanna bought a property with a small farmhouse. It was a tiny two-bedroom home with an attic. At the time, there were six members of the family. There was no way they could fit in there! However, the size was not their utmost priority.

A Tiny Farmhouse
The couple decided to buy the farmhouse for the land that it was located. On the property, there were incredible oak trees that flanked the house. This was made it so irresistible for them. The couple knew that they had to put in a lot of work before they could start living there. However, could this house really suit all six members of the Gaines family?
Committing To The Project
Chip and Joanna had no idea that it was going to eat up 18 months of their lives. Apart from this project, they still had to take care of other homes as well. This meant that they could not focus on it fulltime.

Committing To The Project
The two of them found some fascinating stuff as they worked on the home renovation project. For one thing, they saw paperwork from 1895! It was tricky to figure out just how old this farmhouse was. Joanna found the house more appealing when she knew that it had such a long history with it.
Ready At Last
It took them a year and a half before it was ready for habitation. The Gaines family started to live in the renovated farmhouse in October 2013.

Ready At Last
Joanna wanted to keep the charm and character of the old farmhouse, so this was a major consideration during the process. It is also the reason they decided to add only one structure. They created an extension for the master bedroom. This did not mean that Joanna was going to stop adding the perfect fixtures and fittings to turn the farmhouse into the house of her dreams, however!
Natural Colors
When it was time for them to pick the color palette for the farmhouse, they picked neutral colors. If you want to hear more about it, you should read the blog they made to discuss the renovation in detail!

Natural Colors
They did not make a lot of changes to the exterior of the building. It looked just as classic and charming as it used to, perhaps even more so when they finished adding the gorgeous white finish that suited the wooden beams. The oak trees, which initially got their attention, only added to the atmosphere.
A Look Inside
The couple decided that it was best to stick to a neutral palette inside the house. By doing this, they would ensure that the design would match the exterior. The double doors opened to a roomy and bright entrance hall full of white and grey.

A Look Inside
We are sure everyone expected the interior to look gorgeous. They definitely did not disappoint! After all, it is not a secret that Joanna is one talented designer. She added accents and pieces that made the space even more charming. Take a load of that script wall art and metal coat rack.
Creating A Flow
Joanna and Chip knew that it was very important to have seamless interior design. In order to do such a thing, they decided to demolish some walls and restructure the whole place to suit what they needed.

Creating A Flow
It is not a secret that the kitchen can either make or a break a house. This is the reason they decided to use white tiling on the ceiling. Subsequently, they chose black fittings and fixtures to add some contrast. We think the breakfast bar is a great choice because it is both stylish and functional.
Lounge And Diner Included
The couple wanted to add a lounge and diner on the other side of the room. If you needed any proof that they planned the interior of the home very well, look no further than this multi-purpose space. The dining table can accommodate the entire family. The cozy couch is also great when they need to relax.

Lounge And Diner Included
They chose accessories and then put them in the proper spot to make sure the design was followed. We cannot think of anything that seems out of place here. Do you? Joanna owns a store for accessories and furnishings. If you want your house to look like this, make sure to check out Magnolia Market!
Perfectly Relaxing
When you visit their home and look at the lounge area, we are sure that you will notice how calming the place seems to be. The two of them knew that the home is a place where one can relax in.

Perfectly Relaxing
The lounge area is truly functional, but this does not mean that it is without charm. Do not forget that it was Chip and Joanna Gaines, home renovation experts, who worked on this.
Final Touches
Around the farmhouse, you will see the finishing touches the two of them added. They chose each thing in the house with great care. Yup, that includes everything from the lamps to the vase to the couch.

Final Touches
You will find a lot of these items at Magnolia Market. If you are near Texas, you can pay the physical store a visit. If not, it is always possible to shop online. This is the way to go if you want to emulate their incredible home!
Chip And Joanna’s Master Room
Even though the master bedroom was not an original part of the house, we think it was wise of them to change things up. After all, it was hard enough to convert the farmhouse into a house for six people.

Chip And Joanna’s Master Room
Joanna decided to add old doors so that the classic appeal of this farmhouse will stay intact. Aside from that, she chose not to change the flooring in the attic since she liked its rustic charm. We have to admit that our favorite part is the gorgeous bed over there, however.
Ultimately Relaxing
Chip and Joanna are busy people who need to take care of lots of things. The two of them run a couple of businesses and handles a spin-off show to boot. Considering all of these, we are amazed by the fact that they still find the time to relax.

Ultimately Relaxing
When it is finally the time for them to rest, they like to simply spend some time in the charming room they have created for themselves. During the winter, they use the fireplace to keep the house warm.
The En-Suite Bathroom
We want to direct your attention to the free-standing tub located in the en suite bathroom in the master bedroom. It is so stunning, which is an adjective that also applies to the other parts of the room.

The En Suite Bathroom
Don’t you think that this bathroom door is gorgeous? It can stand as an accent piece by itself. Joanna took the interior design so seriously that she searched for old doors that suited the house. This door really goes well with those black lanterns!
A Glimpse Inside
Aside from the tub, there are two sinks in there. One is for him, the other is for her. Of course, how can we possibly not mention that stunning chandelier? It is too beautiful for words.

A Glimpse Inside
We really do not doubt that they made the right decision by going with a neutral color scheme. This bathroom looks perfectly aligned with the other parts of the house. We think everyone should follow in their footsteps and put the same amount of consideration into the bathroom as well.
The Girls Room
The lovebirds have two daughters, Emmie Kay and Ella Rose. They wanted to two girls to have the best room. Nothing else is going to suit their little princesses, after all.

The Girls Room
It is common for parents to pink their daughter’s room in pink. However, Joanna did not want to stray from the palette that they had been using. She chose white instead! This only worked to further accentuate the effect of the accent pieces. The dollhouse looks excellent as well.
The Boys Room
Of course, there is no way that we can avoid talking about their three boys. At the time there were only two sons. In June 2018, the family welcomed Crew! This completed the boy-girl-boy pattern again.

The Boys Room
The oldest boy is none other than 13-year-old Drake. The middle brother, meanwhile, is the 10-year-old Duke. The room was designed with the theme of adventure. They made sure that their boys had a lot of room for them to play in. The extra bed is perfect if they had a friend who wanted to stay the night.
Adventurous
We think it is cool that the boys can get up to a lot of things even in the bedroom. They put up a map on the wall, which only shows the interest they had in an adventure. The ladders also look like a great deal of fun.

Adventurous
All For The Love Of Family
As you can see, they truly did put in a lot of effort to make the house as peaceful and comfortable as could be. They wanted to give their children the best that they could offer. If you take a look at the social media accounts Joanna has, you will see that she loves her family more than anything else!

All For The Love Of Family
Coffee Time
There is no way that you can miss some of the more eccentric details in the house. Take a look at the coffee bar they own. We bet their trips to the coffee shop have dwindled down ever since they got it.

Coffee Time
Kiddies Craft Space
We doubt you will feel surprised to hear that Chip and Joanna are fans of crafty things. They even chose to add a craft room for their children. This is the place to be when you need to unleash your creativity.

Kiddies Craft Space
Another Crafty Space
Considering that this was a huge and artistic family, there was no way that a single room would do the trick. The grownups needed one of their own as well. Joanna, in particular, needed her own craft room.

What’s Outside?
This is what the family farmhouse looks like from the outside. It is what the Gaines family consider to be their home. This is the place where they can truly relax and ask their loved ones to come over.

What’s Outside
Life On A Farm
Just how big is the property anyway? Apparently, the land measures 40 acres in total. The couple has discussed how they can maximize all that space already. Among other things, they want to fill it with various trees! They also hope to bring animals there as well.

Life On A Farm
Greenhouse
That is not all, however. There is also a gorgeous greenhouse outside! It must be among the best features on their property. The Gaines family can grow any plant that they want at any time of the year.

Relaxing On The Porch
The entire family probably likes to spend the warm evenings on their beautiful porch. Of course, this part of the farmhouse also fits in perfectly with the other areas.

Wise Words
As you can see, Chip and Joanna never have to worry about missing their favorite plants since they can grow them year-round. We bet they are also hoping to teach the little ones about flora in the future!

Enough Room For The Whole Family
They have already transformed this property into the farmhouse of their dreams. On top of that, they added a chicken coop and a silo. We bet the latter will be occupied soon. Chip and Joanna work together to maintain the property. They want to make sure that it complements its surroundings.

Enough Room The Whole Family
Working At Home
The outside space is good for gatherings and events. We love the fact that it comes with a fire pit as well as a repurposed barn. The dining set is also gorgeous. We bet they host some awesome dinner parties and family brunches here. Without a doubt, they have a lot of uses for this great space.

The Perfect Garden
You will find the kiddy craft room in the attic of the farmhouse. We think that this is the ideal location for such a room! The space is good for kids who want to work on something creative and artsy. On top of that, this is probably the room without lots of white and bright furniture.

Blissful Kitchen
The coffee bar is a clear indicator that Chip and Joanna love their java. Apart from this, it also shows just how much they love each other. The two of them put in a lot of effort to make sure that the house is comfortable. Don’t you wish that you own a coffee bar like this one as well?

A Place For Everything
Her Instagram account has a lot of family photos, which is yet another sign of how much she values her family. The family tends to go on fun adventures together, which sounds ideal. Apart from that, Chip and Joanna decided to put up family photos on the walls of the farmhouse as well. The photos are in black and white so that they will look perfect in the house. They really did think the whole thing through.

A Place For Everything
Enough Play Space
It goes without saying that Chip and Joanna also used the neutral color palette when they designed this room. Despite this, they wanted it to look suitable for young kids as well. Not only that, they provided the boys with enough space for them to carry out any physical endeavor that they wanted.

Enough Play Space
Little Nooks
You will find various works of art all over the farmhouse. They added a couple of saying that reflects the way the two of them view family, life, and more.

You will find those words in the entrance hall. They pretty much say just how much Joanna and Chip love the way the house looks. The Gaines family is pretty big, but they still managed to exhibit the distinctive personalities of all the family members. How moving is that?!

They ensured that the fireplace in the farmhouse were all in good condition. They even added various additions around these structures. We are just happy that they did this because the result is lovely.

Outdoor Lovers
Aside from the lovely greenhouse, Joanna created a little garden of her own as well. Without a doubt, this is one family that adores the great outdoors. There are times when we wish we were their kids!

No Unwanted Guests
She did not fail to design the garden in such a way that it blended in with the surroundings. They also installed a fence to keep out any wild and unwanted animals away from the plants.

They created the kitchen with a plan in mind. They installed just about everything one would ever need to cook a meal. Aside from that, Chip and Joanna also made sure that the design of the room is perfect. There is even a quirky little sign that says, “supermarket”.

The kids were probably taught the importance of being clean and organized. When you have a lot of kids, this is going to be important for the sake of your sanity.

Room For Activities
Some of the kids wanted a big play area where they could spend their time in. It is a good thing that their parents knew what to do after hearing a request like that.

Creativity Is Good For The Soul
The boys worked hard to create these houses of cards right on the staircase. You can see how Chip and Joanna reacted to something like that. It is adorable to see that they do encourage these little antics!

It turns out that they are more than happy with the situation right now. They do not plan to sell it since this is the perfect place for them to raise the kids. It is nice to hear that the children are just as fond of the farmhouse as they are. Regardless of what might happen in the future, we are sure the family will still be as close as ever.
