The canal runs from the Basin de l’Arsenal on the Seine to just below the Bastille. The latter housed a prison that was burned down during the French Revolution. It then emerges near Place de la République before climbing up to the Bassin de la Villette in the north. At this point, it joins the Canal de l’Ourcq.
