In addition to directing and co-producing the 2003 epic historical action thriller The Last Samurai, Edward Zwick also co-wrote the screenplay with Marshall Herskovitz and John Logan from a plot idea created by Logan. In addition to Tom Cruise, who also co-produced the movie, who plays a soldier-turned-samurai who befriends Ken Watanabe, other actors who appear in supporting parts include Timothy Spall, Billy Connolly, Tony Goldwyn, Hiroyuki Sanada, Koyuki, and Shin Koyamada.
