The frontman for Culture Club, one of the most successful music groups of the 1980s, Boy George was born George Alan O’Dowd and grew up in Dublin, Ireland. George stood out as a London club kid known for his eccentric fashion sense and outlandish attitudes until he was discovered by Malcolm McLaren, the owner of the Sex Pistol. Songs like “Karma Chameleon,” “Time (Clock of the Heart),” and “Do You Just Want to Hurt Me.” have sold millions of copies as a result of Boy George’s striking physical look. Life did not go smoothly for Boy George once the band broke up, and he struggled for a long period of time after that. Culture Club’s dissolution was precipitated by a sexual liaison between George and Jon Moss, the band’s guitarist, drug use, and the untimely death of their keyboard player due to an overdose, as he later revealed in interviews with Rolling Stone and other publications. After imprisoning and sexually raping a tenant’s child, he was sentenced to a significant amount of time in prison. Boy George has served the entirety of his term and is now trying a resurgence. He writes novels, designs apparel, takes photographs, and continues to compose music. He lives in New York City.
