Decorating a room is no easy feat to accomplish. From choosing paint colors and furniture pieces to figuring out the layout, there are many things that can go wrong along the way. Of course, that’s why we have interior designers to help us design the best spaces possible in our homes. but when you don’t have the option to hire someone or simply don’t want to, here are some basic mistakes people tend to make when designing their homes that you should avoid.
Using Dark Furniture Is Small Spaces
Colors make a big difference when it comes to decorating a room. Darker colors make a room look smaller while lighter colors will make a room look bigger. So, when you’re dealing with a small space, it’s important to stick to lighter colors to make it seem roomier and less cramped. Don’t go buying a dark couch – it won’t make the room look cozy, it’ll make it look suffocated. Opt for a cream-colored or even white couch.
Adding Too Many Colors
As we’ve mentioned, colors matter in home decor. More specifically, they can make or break a space. Don’t add a whole array of colors to just one room. Doing this will only make the room look confusing and messy rather than bright and colorful. If you do want some fun additions to the room, choose two or three colors and stick to them when buying items. This will achieve a colorful look without it being overwhelming.
Measure Everything
In a more technical aspect, many people tend to just eyeball furniture items they plan on buying for a room without double-checking everything will fit well together. Not measuring things accurately is a sure way to end up with a disaster on your hands. Even if things fit, they might not look good together or leave you room for anything else. Or, on the flip side, you might end up with too much empty space and nothing to do with it. Always measure everything!
Putting All the Furniture Against The Wall
Look, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should put all your furniture flush against the wall. Logically, it might seem like you’re doing the right thing and saving space, right? Not so much. In actuality, you’re only making the room look underutilized and badly organized. It’s best to set up furniture pieces like couches and coffee tables near each other to create a cohesive look in a room.
Too Many Accent Pillows
Yes, accent pillows are a great addition to a room. However, there is a limit to how many should be in a room. Before you go all-out buying numerous pillows to throw all over the place, take a moment to look at the room and see how many could fit there comfortably. Adding too many will just make the room look cluttered and messy rather than cozy.
One Light Source
Lighting might seem like something more practical, but it very much is part of the decorating process. Be sure to layer lighting sources in rooms so you have options based on the ambiance you want to create. Dimmers are always a good thing to have, too.
