Compared to previous years, Clare and her friends saw several chaperones inside the room. The fathers of the students, who stared down from the balcony, were many of the observers. It was to keep an eye on the people in attendance. They might have glanced down at the event to watch the girls dance. The girls were becoming uncomfortable with the atmosphere of prom night.
