When the teenager entered the dance, Ann Duncan headed straight toward Clare. The organizer grabbed Clare’s arm, led her away from the dance floor, and reprimanded her for being too provocative for the chaperones in the way she moved and danced. The fathers were anxious that it would cause the boys to imagine impure ideas in the way she flaunted.

Telling a teenage girl that her dress and dance moves were the cause of the boys’ impure thoughts was the equivalent of telling someone that they were hoping to have something awful happen to them. Clare was frustrated with what Ann said and uncomfortable because her actions could not be why the men came up with such thoughts.
