Modell’s
The century-old family-owned sporting goods chain, Modell’s Sporting Goods, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will shutter its remaining 115 stores. It is the first traditional retailer to succumb to a world that is changing rapidly. Established in 1889 by Morris A. Modell, according to the company’s website, the first Modell store was located on Cortlandt Street in lower Manhattan. The chain, which is owned by the Modell family’s fourth generation, built the company into a chain of over 150 stores in the Northeast.
A.C. Moore
The craft-store chain A.C. Moore will close down all 145 of its stores. In November, A.C. Moore’s parent company, Nicole Crafts, announced the closings and said it would turn about 40 locations into Michaels stores. Plans for the closings will be shared in the coming weeks and the A.C., according to the group. On Monday, Moore’s website will stop accepting online orders. Orders placed previously will still ship, the company said.
